Winning composition of 2014 PESIO Celebrate Canada Composers Competition. Composer’s note: “Ocean Child is inspired by the true stories of beached whales on Canada’s West Coast. With original lyrics created by Toronto writer Marjorie Chan, the work traces us through the long memories and experiences of a young whale’s life as she traverses the ocean blue. The soprano will sing M’Whell, a young whale trapped on the sand. Music sails through glimpses of Canadian waters, beaches, sounds and images of special birds and animals, occasional nostalgic references to Canadian folk songs, also embracing some human aspects s by mimicking voices of CBC Radio broadcasters and warm hearted West coast rescuers – Alice Ping Yee Ho”
